Americans have latched onto green beer as a novelty, and it has quickly become one of the drink must-haves every year around St. Patrick’s Day. Many people like the idea of turning everything green on the Irish holiday, and beer happens to be one of the most popular items to play with. There is a rumor that a doctor brewed green beer, and we all know it. Dr. Thomas Curtin, an eye surgeon, and coroner, colored beer for the first time in 1914.
He did so for a St. Patrick’s Day party at the Schnerer Club of Morrisania in the Bronx. You do not need special bartending skills to make a green beer, and there is no elaborate recipe for this beer. In essence, it is a light-colored beer that has a drop of green food coloring added to it. It is only the color that changes, not the flavor. If you want to celebrate Ireland’s heritage and drink like an Irishman, nothing is more appropriate than a pint of Guinness or a shot of Irish whiskey.
